Sing your song

As I’ve been spending more time in my garden recently, I’ve been treated to an increasing variety of birdsong.  The pretty tweeting of the smaller birds; bluetits, robins, sparrows and finches.  The louder more noticeable wake up call of the blackbird or its slightly more annoying warning call when a cat is close by.  The cawing of the crows, the screeching of the seagulls and even the occasional lone honk of a goose.  Each bird has its own voice, its own message, it’s own song to sing. A new visitor to our garden is the Greater Spotted Woodpecker, which the Woodland Trust states is “not afraid to make itself heard”.  It is relatively quiet when it’s eating from our bird feeder but certainly when I walk through the woods, it’s distinctive sound of hammering as it’s beak hits wood is unmistakable. Living Water

Water is such a vital and essential element of all life.   If we look at earth from space, we see that over 70% of our planet is made up of water.   Our own bodies, too are made up of over 60% water. The greater part of our world is made up of water. Raging seas, flowing rivers and gentle pools.  Which do you associate with in this present moment?  Are you a raging sea, a fast flowing, babbling brook, a slow, wide meandering river, or a gentle, peaceful pool of still water?  Or maybe your stuck at the edge of the river?  Caught up in some foreign bit of discarded waste or are you wedged amongst the weeds and reeds growing at the shallower edges of the water? Maybe you’re none of these?  Maybe you’re feeling dehydrated, parched and dry like a desert that has waited long for the rainy season?  Maybe you’re in need of living water within you to refresh and re-hydrate you? The Cosmic Sea

The symbolism of the sea in the Bible begins with the creation story.  The creation of the universe by God was seen by ancient Hebraic peoples as creation from the cosmic sea (symbolic perhaps of the spiritual realm).  In Genesis God separates the waters creating the sky (heaven) and the sea/water on earth as 2 distinct realms and then places boundaries on the earthly seas by creating land.  At creation the Spirit is present as he hovered over the waters bringing order to the chaos. The sea is the source of all water on earth.  Water springs forth from below and drops through apertures in the firmament above as rain and snow, even providing water for the great flood (Gen 7:11 & 8:2 – the rain fell in mighty torrents and the underground waters stopped flowing).  God is seen to therefore use the sea in judgment against sin.  In contrast, in Micah 7:19, we see God’s forgiveness by “casting sin into the depths of the sea” but t...
